The three women walked to the next site of the action, trailing the crowd, which seemed to know where it was going.
âYou know,â said Stella, âI canât believe this whole thing. I mean, Iâve seen some weird stuff in my days, trust me. But, God, who are these guys?â
âItâs pretty odd, I guess,â said Delaney. They kept walking.
âPretty odd?â
âHmm,â Delaney said.
âIâd say,â Stella said. âYou got five hundred guys dressed up as soldiers from the Civil War. Itâs pretty goddamn odd.â
âI donât know. I think itâs kind of sweet,â said Delaney.
âSweet?â
âYou know ⦠men. Theyâre all little boys inside. Theyâre just playinâ dress up out here. Bunch of big old weird guys playinâ dress up. Honey, thereâs worse things in the world.â
Stella didnât say anything.
âAnd Reynolds seems to like it.â
âYes,â said Marisol. âHe like it very much.â Then she changed the subject. âLaney, I want to go over to the store again and check on our dresses for the party.â
âOh, thatâs right,â Delaney said. âGood idea.â
âParty?â said Stella. âWhat party?â
âThey have a big party tonight. Itâs the big gay ball,â Marisol said.
âThe cotillion, sugar. I think it can be called a gala,â Delaney said.
âWhat es âgalaâ?â
Stella thought about it and realized she didnât know the answer. âIt means big, I guess,â she said.
âCome get dresses with us,â said Delaney to Stella.
Stella said, âIâll go with you guys. But Iâm not getting a dress.â
Marisolâs phone rang. âHola, mi amor. Dónde estás?â
âIs he with Lance?â said Delaney.
âEstás con Lance?â Marisol said. She looked at Delaney. âYes.â
âTell them to come!â Delaney said. âTell them we will get them uniforms, and they can fight!â
Marisol agreed and started rattling away in Spanish.
âOur sons are both eighteen,â Delaney said to Stella. âThey will love this.â
âReally?â said Stella.
âOf course. Itâs so crazy,â Delaney said. âOur boys are two months apart. Theyâre like brothers.â
âMy daughter is the same age,â Stella said.
âYouâre kidding!â
âGoing to be a sophomore,â said Stella.
âYouâre kidding! Same with our kids,â Delaney pointed at Marisol. âWell, you know, graduating from home.â Then she grabbed Stellaâs arm. âTell her to come!â
Stella looked at her. âGraduating from home?â
âYes, we homeschool.â
âYou mean, they donât go to a school?â
âThatâs right,â said Marisol. âWeâve taught them at home from the principles of the Secret.â
