The three women walked to the next site of the action, trailing the crowd, which seemed to know where it was going.

“You know,” said Stella, “I can’t believe this whole thing. I mean, I’ve seen some weird stuff in my days, trust me. But, God, who are these guys?”

“It’s pretty odd, I guess,” said Delaney. They kept walking.

“Pretty odd?”

“Hmm,” Delaney said.

“I’d say,” Stella said. “You got five hundred guys dressed up as soldiers from the Civil War. It’s pretty goddamn odd.”

“I don’t know. I think it’s kind of sweet,” said Delaney.

“Sweet?”

“You know … men. They’re all little boys inside. They’re just playin’ dress up out here. Bunch of big old weird guys playin’ dress up. Honey, there’s worse things in the world.”

Stella didn’t say anything.

“And Reynolds seems to like it.”

“Yes,” said Marisol. “He like it very much.” Then she changed the subject. “Laney, I want to go over to the store again and check on our dresses for the party.”

“Oh, that’s right,” Delaney said. “Good idea.”

“Party?” said Stella. “What party?”

“They have a big party tonight. It’s the big gay ball,” Marisol said.

“The cotillion, sugar. I think it can be called a gala,” Delaney said.

“What es ‘gala’?”

Stella thought about it and realized she didn’t know the answer. “It means big, I guess,” she said.

“Come get dresses with us,” said Delaney to Stella.

Stella said, “I’ll go with you guys. But I’m not getting a dress.”

Marisol’s phone rang. “Hola, mi amor. Dónde estás?”

“Is he with Lance?” said Delaney.

“Estás con Lance?” Marisol said. She looked at Delaney. “Yes.”

“Tell them to come!” Delaney said. “Tell them we will get them uniforms, and they can fight!”

Marisol agreed and started rattling away in Spanish.

“Our sons are both eighteen,” Delaney said to Stella. “They will love this.”

“Really?” said Stella.

“Of course. It’s so crazy,” Delaney said. “Our boys are two months apart. They’re like brothers.”

“My daughter is the same age,” Stella said.

“You’re kidding!”

“Going to be a sophomore,” said Stella.

“You’re kidding! Same with our kids,” Delaney pointed at Marisol. “Well, you know, graduating from home.” Then she grabbed Stella’s arm. “Tell her to come!”

Stella looked at her. “Graduating from home?”

“Yes, we homeschool.”

“You mean, they don’t go to a school?”

“That’s right,” said Marisol. “We’ve taught them at home from the principles of the Secret.”
